Matthew Shewchuk Portfolios

The fundamental element of my work is curiosity. Exploration of new ideas, forms and constructions is what drives my experimentation with materials. I love to push the boundaries of techniques or try to create new ones.

As an individual I cannot separate myself from my life experiences. My work is drawn from my own unique interactions. I have been very fortunate to have been able to travel extensively through Europe, Asia, Austral-Asia and South America. Spending long periods of time living and working in over 35 countries. Outside of growing up and living in the US, a majority of my time has been spent living and working in Japan. My designs often sub-consciously reflect a subtle Asian sensibility.

My inspiration comes from the natural world. I like to convey a sense of playfulness in my pieces and believe that all woodwork should evoke an emotional response. Created objects should have personality as well as reflect the personality of the creator.
